First Session for an Ongoing Series on Pirkei Avot
We’ll look at the text from which Rabbi Tarfon’s teaching and many others come (“If I am not for myself, who will be for me…”), and ask: what does it mean? What does it mean for me? Where in this work can I find inspiration and — dare I say it? — understanding of our world and work, and reason for hope?
We’ll start at 1:1 and finish at the end (6:11) in an ongoing, year-round project beginning on February 3 and lasting for one hour, 7 to 8 pm. This will be a critical and historical look at Pirkei Avot. Will we find wisdom? At times. Folly? Certainly that, as well. Something interesting? Almost always.
“Do I need to know Hebrew?” Goodness, no. There are plenty of translations, and at times we’ll compare translations to see what seems like the best reading to our modern eyes.
