If you are not a member of Machar, but interested in trying out a session or two, please contact for more information about attending.
Our Jewish Cultural School is for children from kindergarten to 7th grade/b mitzvah and meets at 9:30 a.m. on most Sundays during the school year. Machar’s Sunday school integrates Jewish history, culture, values, and practice into a developmentally appropriate curriculum at each grade level, beginning with kindergarten and running through 6th grade, and culminating in our 7th grade/B Mitzvah year program. We also provide post-mitzvah aged teens opportunities to play a leadership role by having them assist in Jewish Cultural School classrooms and helping to organize community service activities on behalf of the congregation.
While their children are in class, parents may attend our excellent Adult Education program.
Our talented and dynamic teachers incorporate literature, writing, discussion, and the arts to engage children in ways that help them understand and relate to the curriculum content. The curriculum builds, year by year, to create a unified experience in the history and culture of the Jewish people, studied through the framework of our secular humanistic Jewish values.
Observing and understanding the significance of Jewish holidays is an important part of our educational program, and we hold children’s services at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prior to the congregational services. We have annual Hanukkah and Purim parties, and also commemorate other holidays in our inter-generational Community Sunday gatherings. Children learn about holiday traditions in a humanistic context.
Parents contribute to the strength of our Jewish Cultural School. There are many ways to get involved. Whether you want to help with party planning, participate in curriculum development, or host your child’s class for a potluck in your home, our program and your child will benefit from your involvement.
